www.ktf.com | KTF, a leading Korean mobile communications provider, has relied on Amdocs’ scalability and functionality to power its rapid growth from zero to more than 10 million subscribers in five years. KTF is majority-owned by KT, with Microsoft and Qualcomm as minority shareholders.
Ki-Chul Kim, CIO, KTF, South Korea, speaks out about working with Amdocs:
SCALABILITY SUPPORTING EXPLOSIVE GROWTH Since KTF started its first commercial service in November 1997, it underwent an extremely rapid growth, with the number of subscribers increasing by one million every six months. In early 2000 we even made it to the Guinness Book of World Records for posting the largest number of subscribers in the shortest period. Even after that, we continued with strong growth in customers and completed two mergers. We will have an estimated 10.5 million subscribers by the end of 2003.
During this process, scalability of the billing system was very important because this provided us with the infrastructure to accommodate more subscribers. Thanks to the Amdocs billing system, we were able to smoothly keep pace with this explosive growth.
UNMATCHED FLEXIBILITY AND RAPID TIME TO MARKET In my view, in a competitive environment such as this, time to market is critical. Because of fierce competition, we're constantly introducing new products and services. In fact, we're getting about 100 service requests from the marketing department every month and to meet these requirements our billing system obviously has to be very flexible. With the Amdocs billing system, we have been able to address the requirements without much difficulty.
In addition, we are able to offer a range of different services segmented for specific groups – for example, services targeted at certain age groups. In order for us to provide these various services, the Amdocs billing platform has provided significant advantages in scalability and flexibility.
BROAD SUPPORT FOR PRICE PLANS TO BOOST GROWTH At the end of 2003, KTF had more than 10 million subscribers, about $4.8 billion in revenue and $500 million in net profit. For next year, our business plan is to expand our service revenue by 10% and to increase the number of subscribers to 12 million. We are trying to rev up our growth drivers. In order to do this, we will need to offer a variety of price plans, and we believe that the Amdocs billing system will provide the necessary stability and flexibility to support these price plans.
STABILITY IN HANDLING BILLIONS OF DATA RECORDS When we selected the Amdocs solution in 1997, two of the most important criteria were functionality and scalability. With that perspective, we selected Amdocs. And to this day, with more than 10 million subscribers, we are processing all subscribers smoothly using a single platform.
For example, we are currently processing 2.4 billion CDRs per month using the Amdocs acquisition and formatting capabilities and about 1.9 billion CDRs each month with Amdocs' rating. So, for more than 10 million subscribers, we are handling the billing process in a single five to six day billing cycle each month with no glitches.
PARTNERSHIP AND COMMITMENT TO DELIVER When we were trying to deploy the Amdocs billing system in the early stages of our business getting off the ground, everyone told us that it was simply impossible to carry out the deployment within the short timeframe that we had set for ourselves. But with the dedication and commitment from the Amdocs and KTF professionals, we were able to carry out the implementation in six months.
After the deployment, the support, documentation and open source code provided by Amdocs enabled KTF staff to understand the Amdocs system. So when we had to modify the system or fulfill service requests from our users, we were able to handle it ourselves by making architectural changes. This has been a big help to us.
